Career Biography

Maria Angelica Nivia Duque is a lawyer with over 20 years of professional experience, specialising in M&A, infrastructure and energy projects. With a strong foundation in both legal and business disciplines—thanks to her Law degree from Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, 2005) and a Master of International Business from La Trobe University (Melbourne, 2008)—she has built a career supporting national and multinational companies across high-impact industries (Oil and Gas, fuels, and renewable energies).

Since 2020, Maria Angelica has served as Legal Manager at AES Colombia. As part of the Management Committee, she leads a legal team and plays a vital role in key corporate decisions. She has overseen the legal development and execution of major renewable energy projects. She also spearheaded the creation of a joint venture with Ecopetrol S.A. for the development of the Jemeiwaa Ka’I wind cluster in La Guajira. Additionally, she led the refinancing of over COP 1bn in local bank debt and oversaw critical infrastructure initiatives such as the Chivor II Tunnel shield replacement. In recognition of her impact, she received the CEO Excellence Award in 2024.

Before joining AES, she was Legal and Corporate Affairs Manager at Biomax S.A. (2015–2020), where she led a multidisciplinary legal team and supported the company’s expansion and corporate consolidation. Her achievements includes leading the acquisition of Prolub’s fuel division, enhancing corporate governance policies, and implementing strategic risk and insurance programs aligned with business goals.

Earlier in her career, from 2008 to 2015, Maria worked for Pacific Rubiales Energy directly and as in-house lawyer, being her last position Corporate Lawyer for New Business and Special Projects. There, she worked in the legal structuring of high-value international transactions—such as the US$320m sale of a stake in Pacific Midstream Ltd., and the full acquisition of Petrominerales Ltd. She also led legal efforts in bidding rounds across Latin America contributing to the company’s regional expansion.

These recent roles are built upon earlier experiences starting in 2005, during which Maria has gained expertise in regulated industries, advising on legal strategy and cross-functional business execution.
