What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

In today’s fast-changing business world, an in-house counsel must be a true jack-of-all-trades, adept at handling various legal areas like compliance, contract law, and employment law.

Quick thinking and fast decision-making are essential, but they must never come at the expense of quality. As legal counsel, striking the perfect balance between efficiency and thorough decision-making is key. This means paying close attention to details to ensure that the advice given is both reliable, sound, and effective.

Being sharp-eyed about risks and skilled in risk management is crucial. This involves spotting potential pitfalls and finding ways to avoid them, thereby safeguarding the company from unforeseen challenges. But that’s not all—driving business growth is equally important. By working closely with other departments to understand their goals and challenges, in-house counsel can identify how legal strategies can help achieve these objectives. Embracing a growth mindset and enjoying collaboration with colleagues from diverse backgrounds is vital.

In essence, a modern in-house counsel is not just a legal advisor but a pivotal player in the business’s success. They are versatile, quick-thinking, thorough, adept at managing risks, and strong business partners. These qualities enable them to navigate the legal landscape and support the company’s goals.

What do you think sets you apart from other in-house counsel?

What sets me apart from other in-house legal professionals is my unique blend of education and experience. With a master’s degree in business psychology, in addition to Master of Law, I offer a different perspective on understanding human behavior and organizational dynamics, which enhances my ability to address legal issues effectively.

Additionally, my six years as an attorney in one of the world’s most successful commercial companies have provided me with practical insights into corporate and commercial operations and how legal strategies can align with business goals. This combination of skills and experience makes me a well-rounded legal advisor.

What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

I’m passionate about promoting diversity and fostering an inclusive work environment. Diversity brings a wealth of perspectives and ideas, which is essential for innovation and growth. Creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and included not only boosts morale but also enhances productivity and creativity.

In addition to this, I believe in taking ownership of one’s work and daring to try out new things. Embracing challenges and experimenting with new approaches can lead to breakthroughs and personal growth. It’s about creating a culture where people feel empowered to take risks and learn from their experiences.
