Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?  

Of course, I proposed to the board of directors the idea of integrating the legal perspective across all the different processes of the company, not only with the perspective that the legal team is solely responsible for damage prevention, but that the legal team can also be a strategic partner to the business.  

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?  

The general counsel, within five years, must understand the company’s internal processes, and must be proactive, proposing various strategies to improve these internal processes.
 

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Uruguay?  

Although legal counsel is gradually gaining recognition for its role in the region, CEOs and shareholders in this region still have a long way to go to fully understand the important role that legal counsel plays in a company.  

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?  

I believe that a big step forward for the company lies in accepting the perspective of the legal team, not only in reference to legal issues, but also in addressing various issues from across all departments. Furthermore, the legal team should be integrated into innovation processes that extend outside of their area of expertise.
 

What are some of the key developments that have affected your business over the past year?  

Our software industry was particularly affected by post-pandemic recession. We had to adapt to the changing circumstances and reduced numbers of staff.
 

Do you use any ‘legal tech’ products, and if so, for which areas of your work do you find them most useful?  

Yes, we use legal technology products in regard to invoicing, procurement and signing processes.
