Otis Carter started his career at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago in 2006 before moving to Ropes & Gray, practicing there for approximately four years and then leaving to become general counsel at a private investment firm. In 2014 he moved to TriMark USA, based in South Attleboro, Massachusetts, where he created the in-house legal department from the ground up. TriMark is a fairly spread out company in the food and catering service, restaurant management and kitchen supply industry, acquiring competitors as subsidiaries that operate fairly independently. When Carter first joined the company he spent a long time visiting subsidiary companies and introducing himself. He identifies that ‘the reception was initially quite wary, as they were not used to having a lawyer on their team, but building relationships helped each of them improve their businesses’. Highlights of Carter’s career have included opening international offices, branching out in to financials and capital raising, and working across multiple sectors in his corporate role.
