Marie Oh Huber took on her role with eBay at a pivotal time for the company, providing an immediate challenge for her which she relished: ‘When I joined eBay, the company was in the process of spinning off PayPal – which represented one of the biggest changes in the company’s history to that point. These times of great changes can bring uncertainty and can be unwelcome to some, but they can also provide key opportunities for learning new businesses, working with different people and taking on new challenges and responsibilities. I set out with my new team to embrace these types of changes, starting with understanding where my team was in the different stages of ”change”, to help them grow and flourish. We organised ourselves to support the business, product and technology teams, and the global functions’. Formerly a senior vice president and general counsel at Agilent Technologies, where she was part of the executive team that ‘transformed Agilent from a diversified technology company operating in multiple industries to a life sciences company over the course of about a decade’, Huber has also been central to a number of critical litigation wins in addition to her transaction honours, and has had a major impact on the expansion of the legal team’s abilities. ‘I’m fortunate to work with an incredibly talented team and learn every day from our terrific global teammates about the business, competition, and legal, regulatory, and policy matters affecting our business. I champion the culture of eBay, serving as an integrated business partner, ensuring world-class, practical advice, and forging a path for all team members to thrive and grow. eBay’s legal department is continually looking to innovate and improve the way it works. A few examples already yielding significant results include a new focus on people development, building a world-class pro bono program for the team and an increased use of technology – particularly artificial intelligence – in the team’, Huber explains.
