Lynn Charytan
Senior vice president and senior deputy general counsel | Comcast
Lynn Charytan cites managing a team of lawyers as one of the most rewarding tasks she’s been responsible for: ‘Offering them support and recognition, along with opportunities to learn, take responsibility and grow, may just be the biggest highlight of my entire career’ she says. Charytan joined Comcast in 2010 in the capacity of chief regulatory counsel, and after five years she assumed the role of general counsel. Being a holistic and passionate leader has been highly gratifying for Charytan, and has entailed being present and hands on in every aspect of the teams’ operations. ‘As I’ve learned – and now share with my team – being a legal manager means you cannot be a lawyer who manages in her spare time. The management and support of the lawyers on my team is a critical part of my job’ she states. Before joining Comcast, Charytan was a partner at WilmerHale in Washington DC where she practiced for more than 17 years, heading up the communications group during her last few years there. She also worked at The Washington Post for two years and clerked for Judge Stanley Sporkin on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Going in-house has been a great decision for Charytan, giving her the opportunity to become aligned and with a function that values her work. ‘The best part of being inside is becoming part of the team. I don’t take that for granted. You have to earn that every day and let the business know you are there. You have to work to be a valuble asset to them’ explains Charytan.
