Audrey Lee, executive vice president, general counsel of Starz Entertainment, has extensive experience in the media legal industry through multiple executive in-house positions at leading cinematic production companies. She previously worked for Sony Pictures and Lionsgate, and had a private practice career in the media legal industry with Latham & Watkins. During the years when Lee oversaw distribution for Sony Pictures, the industry went through a lot of changes in terms of how content was delivered and consumed. She and her team developed the studio’s first agreements of its kind in the areas of electronic sell through, video-on-demand, 3D, digital cinema, and more. Of this experience she claims: ‘Helping the company navigate changes in technology and windowing allowed me to think more creatively about how we could future-proof our business because there was no precedent to guide me’. Lee was promoted to senior vice president, legal affairs at Sony Pictures to oversee a group of lawyers that handled licensing for the company even though she had never done licensing before. She highlights that ‘this required me to quickly develop a new expertise and gain the trust of a group that knew more than I did. It gave me confidence I didn’t know I had’. Regarding her current position, Starz is currently undergoing tremendous change both in terms of increasing its OTT subscriber base as well as expanding internationally at a very rapid pace. Lee identifies that ‘this is requiring me to think as much like a business person as a legal person. It is a very exciting time for us as a company’. Lee was also instrumental in the merger of Starz and Lionsgate through her previous role at Lionsgate, subsequently bringing her passion her experience to Starz.
