Todd Molz heads up a large department, and oversees the legal activities for 13 offices, but in spite of this, is remarkably hands-on. ‘He often engages in direct dialogue with Oaktree’s investors’, notes Erica Berthou of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. ‘He is a real relationship builder and understands that being a lawyer spans far beyond just the legal documents’. His ability to think commercially and to negotiate is also highlighted; in 2007 a portion of Oaktree was sold via a private offering, and in 2012 it became publicly traded with units listed on the NYSE. Molz played an instrumental role in both.
