About

Timothy Triplett, President, Legal & Risk Management for Black & Veatch, previously was a name partner at a construction boutique. Since moving in-house in 2008, he has enjoyed inside counsel opportunities that allow him to “play a significant role in growing the company,” as observed by one outside counsel. He now leads the global legal and risk management departments for Black & Veatch, including the implementation of a companywide Ethics and Compliance Program. “I am really pleased with how the program has developed,” he said. “The UK Bribery Act and U.S. FCPA programs are very important to companies that operate on a global basis.” He also said he was honored to be asked by his company’s CEO to carry out a year-long study of best governance practices with its Board of Directors. Triplett has been working hard on improving his department’s use of new and innovative insurance products. For example, the department plans to adopt one that brings together coverage for professional indemnity and general liability, where previously they had been kept separate. “I feel there’s a need for this type of coverage in the construction industry,” he said. “They are growing in popularity, and so this keeps us at the cutting edge of these types of insurance products.” He also is committed to providing his team with more opportunities to develop their careers. He introduced a formal “on-boarding” and mentoring program where new attorneys are assigned to senior counsels. He also has regular “Lunch with Tim” sessions. ‘Five or six of our division professionals will go and grab a sandwich, and we discuss issues that are of interest to them,’ he said. ‘I also end every monthly luncheon of the division by asking one professional to introduce another professional. They not only get to know one another better, but the entire department builds camaraderie.’
