General counsel, mortgage operations | PennyMac Loan Services

About

It was something of a coup for PennyMac Loan Services when Mallory Garner agreed to come on board in early 2011. Garner has serious credentials when it comes to mortgages in a post-2008 USA; while working at Bank of America, she helped develop the Making Home Affordable Program guidelines impacting mortgage foreclosures and loan modifications. To do this, she collaborated with the US Department of the Treasury, the Mortgage Bankers Association, other members of the mortgage industry, and numerous different business units at the bank. Upon joining PennyMac, a relatively young company, Garner quickly made her mark by growing and reorganizing the department, and in doing so, has overseen tremendous growth in defense litigation. As Clinton Rockwell of BuckleySandler notes, ‘her mindset is well adapted to the era of heightened consumer protection concerns in which all financial institutions now find themselves. There is no lawyer more committed to the high principles of the profession, and few that have her ability to oversee and guide a compliance management system for a company’. Crucially, Rockwell also notes that she is ‘at all times focused on the bottom line risk and costs for the company’, a sentiment echoed by Garner herself, who says negotiating more competitive rates was one of her first ports of call when taking on the role. Her influence within the business is apparent, and as she puts it herself, she ‘wears many hats’ at PennyMac. In addition to her various legal responsibilities, she co-chairs Mortgage Regulatory Compliance Committee, and is a member of the Executive and Senior Leadership Committees.
