Larry DeRespino has a long track-record as a skilled commercial litigator, and he brought those to bear when he moved in-house at U-Haul. However, recognizing that he lacked the transactional experience more typical of in-house counsel, he quickly got himself up-to-speed and expanded his own practice to include the full range of skills he felt were needed. The nature of the company means he is required to understand almost every facet of corporate law, such as employment, investor relations, insurance and securities, as well as wading through the vast array of risk and compliance considerations. Naturally, his litigation background means he is quick to spot potential problems when they are lurking, and he endeavours to prevent them before they happen. He oversees a team of 17 attorneys and handles relationships with outside counsel across the US and Canada. The fact he still has regular get-togethers with his fellow college alumni enables him to keep up a strong professional network with fellow attorneys in a range of different states.
