About

By his own admission, Josh McMorrow is ‘half-lawyer, half-businessman’, and there’s an abundance of evidence to support this. ‘I am not accepting the notion of a legal department as a cost center – I want us to be a profit center’, he says. And he has the credentials to make such a statement, having achieved just that in his previous role at Air Liquide. When he joined PSC a year ago, he set about trying to repeat it; a first port of call was dredging up a 14-year old insurance policy and pursuing it. Other plans in the pipeline include implementing a system for the company’s real estate portfolio to place it more on the offense than defense, and he has already implemented e-billing. As co-head of HR, McMorrow is on something of a mission to develop a ‘winning culture’, which means ‘talking about it a lot and gradually changing people’s mindset’. He’s also evangelical about taking a lead role before involving outside counsel, but when he does use them, tries to implement innovative fee structures. ‘I’ve used all sorts of AFAs, and I feel the onus should be on the outside lawyer to do their homework and decide on the appropriate fee’. Todd Mensing, of Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing says McMorrow has ‘commanded the respect of every executive he has worked with both at PSC and Air Liquide’, and adds that he ‘represents the future of the General Counsel position’.
