When Bradley Turk made his first move in-house to Tishman Speyer in October 2007, he was unaware of the crisis that was about to hit the global real estate market on which the company relied on. He says ‘when I joined, things were looking rosy. Then 2008 happened and the work changed. There was a lot more restructuring and problem-solving, and that wasn’t my background at all’. Luckily for Tishman, its recent recruit proved to be highly adaptable. Having come through the worst of it, the company is now back in growth mode, an area which also plays to Turk’s strengths. ‘I always felt I had more to offer than just straight legal advice’, he says. ‘I’ve always tried to act in a business-type way, and now that I’m in-house that’s easier to do’. Now that he’s on the other side, he appreciates using outside counsel with a similar mindset as he had: ‘I don’t want lawyers for the sake of being lawyers. I like when they have a business perspective in mind’.
