Career Biography
Amanda Gerrity is group general counsel of Octopus Energy Group, one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy and technology businesses. She joined Octopus in 2020 following more than a decade at EDF Energy, where she was head of legal, bringing deep energy-sector experience and a highly commercial approach to in-house leadership.
Since joining Octopus Energy, Amanda has helped support the Group through a period of exceptional growth and transformation, as it has expanded from a fast-growing UK energy supplier into a global energy and technology group operating across retail, renewable generation, electric vehicles, heat pumps and software.
A defining feature of Amanda’s leadership has been building and maintaining a deliberately small, lean legal team despite the scale and complexity of the business. Rather than creating a large traditional legal function, she has developed a highly trusted team of commercially minded lawyers who are embedded in the business, close to decision-making and empowered to take ownership of significant matters. The model relies on judgement, agility and a willingness to find solutions in fast-moving and often novel situations.
Among Amanda’s most significant achievements was her role in Octopus’s acquisition of Bulb Energy in 2022. The transaction transferred approximately 1.5 million customers from Bulb’s special administration to Octopus through a first-of-its-kind Energy Transfer Scheme. Completed during the energy crisis, it involved a novel legal and regulatory structure, extensive engagement with government and regulators and complex wholesale arrangements. Amanda subsequently coordinated Octopus’s response to judicial review proceedings challenging the transaction, which were ultimately dismissed on their merits by the Court of Appeal in 2025 and subsequent judicial review proceedings.
Amanda and her team have also supported Octopus’s rapid international and strategic expansion, including the acquisition of Shell Energy’s UK and German retail businesses and the related carve-out and onward sale of its broadband business, alongside numerous investments, partnerships and cross-border transactions.
More recently, Amanda has played a central legal role in the separation of Kraken, Octopus’s technology platform, into an independent company. The transaction included Kraken’s first standalone investment round with investors acquiring $1bn of Kraken equity at an $8.65bn valuation to fund both Octopus and Kraken, alongside a further $320m investment into Octopus Energy Group.
