Kürüm Group is primarily focused on the production of iron and steel in Turkey and the Balkans. Made up of five lawyers, its in-house legal function is made up of two lawyers in Turkey, two in Albania and one in Georgia, who divide their work based on their expertise. Talking of recent internal changes for the department, chief legal counsel Ugur Ates explains that, ‘the most important change [to happen] in last two years is attaching all lawyers in the Group in different countries under one chief legal counsel. It was the right thing to do in order to define the Group’s legal strategy’. Regarding their recent achievements for the company, Ates highlights the following about the team: ‘[The] most significant case was applying to the court in Turkey and also in Albania for restructuring entire the debts of the Group’. When asked about the department’s ethos, he explains that, ‘sharing entire information is crucial within the team. Even though each lawyer has different expertise and experience level, everyone should have a voice within the team’.
