About

Çalık Group’s legal team is made up of a unique mix of senior and junior lawyers, as well as non-qualified paralegals and trainee lawyers, 12 lawyers and four paralegals in total. Junior lawyers, trainee lawyers and paralegals are responsible for routine, day-to-day corporate work and contracts whilst the senior lawyers assist with key decision-making, strategy and investment projects. The Çalık Group legal team is organised in a way that a law firm operates. All the team members have general knowledge of many areas of the law whilst work is allocated according to expertise in different areas of law including corporate, employment, contracts, and projects, such as M&A and direct investments, and litigation. Çalik Holding operates in a diverse range of sectors with operations in 22 countries across Central Asia, the Balkans and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions, and employs nearly 31,000 people. Therefore, it has huge number of projects which the legal team can assist on. For example, Çalık Holding and GE Digital entered into a partnership agreement to form Çalık Digital which established a new digitally-focused practice within the Turkish conglomerate, aimed at supporting digital transformation in the country and around the world. Çalık Digital will enable a digital transformation within the Çalık Group, as well as provide digital solutions to industrial customers based on the internet of things (IoT), data science and cloud services. Collaboration aims to accelerate digital transformation of the construction, energy, mining, healthcare and marine sectors within Turkey and beyond. Additionally, the team worked on the Navoi-2 combined heat and power plant and Turakurgan combined cycle power plant projects in Uzbekistan. Çalık Enerji is responsible for the general engineering works, supply of BOP equipment construction, mechanical and electrical installation works, logistics and BOP commissioning in this project. Also, the team worked on the Group’s International Turkmenbaşı Seaport Project constructed in Turkmenistan involving a ferry and passenger terminal, container terminal, general cargo port, bulk cargo port, ship building and repair facility, a “Ro-Ro” and a polypropylene terminal. The project having a budget of US$1.5bn is constructed as the biggest seaport of the Caspian Sea. Türkçü Hıra highlights that, ‘the lawyers in Çalık Group’s legal team move beyond strictly law-related duties by expanding their scope of influence to the overall business affairs of the Group. They have a good understanding of the business aspects of the transactions and therefore have a business-minded approach to solve the problems’.
