SOCAR Trading distributes and trades crude oil worldwide and operates in the areas of trading gasoline, naphtha, LPH, condensates, gasoil and fuel oil. As of December 2007, SOCAR Trading was incorporated as the marketing arm of the state oil company of the Azerbaijan Republic with a mandate to market Azeri barrels. The legal team lends its legal expertise to a number of projects in challenging jurisdictions, involving a multitude of counterparties and stakeholders, both local and international. Described by general counsel Vincent Mohy as ‘strongly solution-orientated and approachable’, the SOCAR Trading legal team consists of four lawyers, one paralegal and one junior contract coordinator. ‘Our team consists of senior, well experienced individuals which allows for a clearly defined scope of work and a lot of independence of each member’, says Mohy. The legal team currently has one lawyer who is in charge of all oil trading and shipping, another who covers all LNG trading and shipping and one who covers all corporate matters. ‘This streamlining is appreciated by our internal clients as they know who their point of contact is within the department’, says Mohy. This is something that permits each member of the team to focus and further develop core skills and expertise.
