Containing some of the most competent sports lawyers in the world, the UEFA legal team has helped European football’s governing body rise above the numerous scandals that have rocked other associations. Headed by general counsel Andrew Mercer, a member of UEFA’s disciplinary and integrity unit who also represents UEFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearings, the team has been involved in a number of first of their kind cases that have called for creative thinking and innovative solutions. This multi-faceted role requires Mercer and the team to keep on top of a number of evolving matters while overseeing the drafting and interpretation of regulations and the drafting of judicial decisions, statements of appeal and other official documentation. The legal team has overseen certain aspects of UEFA’s club licensing and financial fair play programme, working closely with UEFA’s club financial control body overseeing various club licensing and financial fair play investigations carried out throughout the football season and the disciplinary cases brought against clubs.
