Every organisation faces legal challenges, but few have been accused of plotting to destroy the world. In 2008, just before its Large Hadron Collider was due to be initiated, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) faced one of the most unusual legal suits in human history, when opponents of the project sought to obtain an injunction from the European Court of Human Rights that would prevent a world destroying black hole forming under Geneva. Fortunately the team at CERN survived to help with its pioneering work, leading to the evidence suggesting the discovery of new subatomic particles. The legal services team at CERN advises the CERN Council and its subordinate bodies, including its pension fund, on agreements with host states, EU frameworks and collaboration agreements, memoranda of understanding governing experiments, procurement issues and tender contracts. The latter is not as simple as it sounds: the initial construction work for the Large Hadron Collider, which involved constructing a 27km tunnel hundreds of feet below the earth, makes even the largest civic infrastructure projects look tame in comparison.
