Occupying a prestigious position in the in-house legal market, Shannon Thyme Klinger was appointed group general counsel of Novartis, the major Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company, in June 2018 and is a member of the executive committee. Klinger joined the company in 2011 as general counsel – North America for Sandoz, a Novartis subsidiary, in the US and later became the global head of legal and general counsel for Sandoz International. Her roles within Novartis have taken various forms, most recently she served as chief ethics, risk and compliance officer on the executive committee of Novartis, prior to this she was chief ethics and compliance officer and global head of litigation. Before joining Novartis, Klinger worked in the US as a partner at Mayer Brown from 2010 to 2011. She also had a spell as senior vice president and general counsel for Solvay Pharmaceuticals from 2008 to 2010 and vice president of marketing compliance and associate counsel for Barr Laboratories Duramed Pharmaceuticals from 2005 to 2007. She was also a partner at Alston & Bird, where she focused on litigation, antitrust, pharmaceutical legal and regulatory matters.
