About

Jose Camino took up his current position at international Swiss-based group, Metalor Technologies, four years ago, coming from the aluminum company, Alcoa Europe, where he was vice president general counsel for the European region. As the current group general counsel for the world leader in the field of precious metals and advanced materials, with subsidiaries in 17 countries, Camino is responsible for all legal and compliance affairs of the Metalor group, leading a team of in-house lawyers and compliance professionals in Europe, Asia and North America. ‘Working as an international lawyer and having responsibilities over multiple jurisdictions has been a challenge but at the same time a nice opportunity to test my legal abilities to navigate complex matters and to work in close cooperation with other in-house and outside attorneys’, says Camino. He admits that another important aspect for him is not being restricted to the boundaries of the legal role: ‘Even if today the role of the general counsel is much broader than in the past, moving to the business line or management position can be a very exciting adventure’. He has developed a web-based due diligence process which is standard, global and centralised in Switzerland: ‘This has had a great impact in the company because customers, suppliers and stakeholders know that we do business with the same standards irrespective of where we are dealing with them’. Camino was involved in the sale of Metalor group to the Japanese company Tanaka at the end of 2016, successfully dealing with the complexity of an international transaction. When he previously worked at Alcoa, he took on the added responsibility of the corporate functions that provide regional services to all Alcoa businesses present in Europe, including sustainability, communications, government affairs and country management over Italy and Hungary.
