Led by Paul Fredrick (general counsel for the East Asia and Japan Zone), who reports in to deputy group general counsel and regional general counsel for Asia Pacific Christopher Lee, Schneider Electric’s legal team for East Asia and Japan comprises nine highly capable individuals who are responsible for commercial operations of approximately US$2bn in 15 countries. Fredrick has over 20 years of leadership and experience advising senior management in Asia and is known for his innovative approach to progressing transactions and projects. Fredrick has a formidable array of talent on his team including senior counsels Jae-Youp Park in Korea, Katsuo Nagasawa in Japan and Yen Lee Sim in Malaysia, all highly-regarded lawyers whose expertise and hard work have contributed to the legal team’s overall successes throughout the region over the past few years. Fredrick explains that strong relationships inside Schneider Electric are the foundation of all the legal team does. ‘We do not embed lawyers into the business units they support. Rather, I encourage the Legal team to develop quality relationships with commercial colleagues that enable effective collaboration on work being progressed’. Fredrick and the East Asia and Japan legal team are ‘trusted advisors to senior management and business unit managers who appreciate that their lawyers understand the business, have excellent soft skills and can resolve complicated issues in a negotiation or another delicate matter requiring seasoned advice’. Christopher Lee agrees, adding: ‘Our team ethos is very much about collaboration and agility. The legal department both globally and regionally strongly support each other across borders with the belief that we are one team. This collaboration is enhanced by our various network of lawyers which we animate to target certain key areas such as global strategic accounts’.
