Head of legal and corporate secretary Randi Ikhlas Sardoni leads the in-house legal team of major Indonesian life insurance provider Panin Dai-ichi Life, and is at the head of a lean but highly effective four-person legal department. The three subordinate lawyers to Sardoni are responsible for corporate legal and secretarial work, government relations and litigation respectively, which allows for specialisation and the best possible response to any emerging issue. Sardoni explains that the team is especially pleased of its track record in litigation: ‘Up to the present time our team maintains a zero loss rate on litigation cases, and we have always been able to resolve the case in favour of the company or at least get it resolved amicably. Most cases are handled by the in-house counsel directly, so we are very proud of this accomplishment’. Sardoni provides further insight into the team’s philosophy. ‘We focus on providing excellent legal risk management to improve legal risk awareness within the company’, he says, ‘and the culture is always promoted through continuous improvement through implementing a plan-do-check-act cycle’. Alongside this, the team has a fantastic internal camaraderie that it leverages in order to achieve its objectives. ‘We believe our team has the additional advantage and differentiation compared to other in-house legal teams in terms of our fighting spirit and ambition. The energy of the team is a huge assistance in the department always keeping up with the business’s needs’.
