About

US-based Agilent Technologies is a leader in life sciences, diagnostics and applied chemical markets with a global net revenue of US$4.47bn recorded in 2017. It has been present in Singapore since 1999 and, with over 400 employees, is currently the parent company’s Asia Pacific hub for finance and administration, customer care and technical support, as well as being a significant manufacturing site and regional centre for many other Agilent businesses. The legal function for Agilent in the region is comprised of nine lawyers, a senior paralegal and a legal co-ordinator, with managing counsel for Asia Pacific Bernard Tan heading the department. Senior counsel and their teams of legal counsel support different regions, namely Greater China, Japan, India and SAPK (Southeast Asia, Pacific and Korea), handling routine work as well as more complex or strategic matters. Working with Tan in Singapore is Jessica Ng, senior counsel for SAPK, senior attorney Sam Chung and Fauziah Kasmawi, senior paralegal and Asia Pacific legal coordinator. Describing the team’s commitment to continuous improvement in the workspace, Tan says: ‘We are developing a shared database where signed contracts can be uploaded by the business, aimed at cutting down time and effort on manual filing and tracking and sharing precedents and knowledge’. The team also takes a proactive approach in engaging with the business by sitting in management meetings, understanding its concerns before the problems surface and offering viable legal solutions to address these. ‘Our aim is to partner with our internal clients to enable business, but at the same time protect the company from risks’, Tan says when describing his team’s outlook. The Asia Pacific legal function has earned considerable internal recognition for assisting the company on the restructuring and integration of recently acquired businesses such as Dako, Cartegenia, iLab, Seahorse, Multiplicom, Cobalt and others, whilst also leading corporate investigations into employee misconduct and positioning itself as an integral participant in some of the Agilent’s strategic projects in the region. ‘We are also looking for ways to leverage on technology to help save time and resources for the department – these savings can then be channelled into more critical work and team projects’, Tan explains.
