Senior legal counsel | HSBC

Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?

For eleven years in HSBC legal department for retail, I have collaborated as a legal risk steward with IT, cybersecurity, tax, compliance, operational, and financial departments, as well as critical legal firms such as GaxiolaCalvo S.C, Mijares, Angoitia Cortés and Fuentes, Greenberg Traurig S.C, among others.

I have contributed to the formal increase of strategic alliances to carry out banking operations of HSBC with large companies such as Tiendas Oxxo, Soriana, Chedraui, Telecomm, and Yastas.

In the past o years, I have negotiated and prepared around 500 contracts related to installing ATMs. Additionally, I have taken part in one of the biggest HSBC joint venture creations focused on the acquirer business. I have collaborated in actual and new technological implementations such as regulatory APIs, HSBC Mobile Banking, Apple Pay, Biometric voice ID, and others.

I like what I do, but I love when my work contributes to positive changes in customers’ lives.

In your opinion, what are the qualities and skills needed to form a strong legal team?

A solid legal team needs a leader that inspires positivity and people that makes a difference, all the time creating new valuable things, with experience synergising and sharing the knowledge obtained, with a vocation to investigate and learn, turning the knowledge of our most experienced colleagues into new knowledge ready to be used for the benefit of all.

However, the most crucial factor is to have human people who achieve a balance between their professional and personal life, which will invariably mean wonderful experiences for our clients and new challenges for our competitors.

What is the biggest risk to your industry, and how are you contributing to prepare your organisation for this?

The most considerable risk is not taking it. In the financial sector, staying in traditional banking is a promise of stagnation, so from my place, I constantly do things thinking differently and pushing the digitisation of lawyers in the industry, increasing the possibilities of a profound change that improves, speeds up and promotes Mexican banking.
