What is the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

A number one challenge is to lead teams both within the organisation as well as outside to develop breakthrough commercial solutions for projects. This requires in depth knowledge of the legal discipline and of established business solutions. The challenge is the use of advanced skills to instruct or coach teams to think independently, while also maintaining a focus on a thorough understanding of essential legal and business concepts and the issues being confronted in our society.

Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

To act as an owner and commit to Instilling a culture of innovation and results. Improvement comes by prioritising customers and team input jointly. I anticipate the current challenge of communications and connectivity, embrace change and adjust, in pursuit of results. Then I act on their needs by defining and drafting agreements, with customer insight, sustainability goals and business stakeholder requirements. In house legal expertise contributes to the right judgments, the right action plan and cost avoidance targets at no extra cost for the business. The innovation comes by engaging a learning environment of teams to deliver business success. Legal support positions the business to deliver products and solutions considered essential to supporting society on a sustainability journey, by helping with solutions that contribute to control and optimise the use of energy and power.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

A deep knowledge of the legal discipline; enabling collaboration by aligning team plans; to listen and encourage the business team to listen to others; to act on alternative points of view; and to provide a supporting and challenging environment that enables business growth with compliance. To genuinely understand the issues confronting society, culture and the people you serve. To execute with passion and commitment every step of the way.
