Cementos Pacasmayo is the largest cement company in the north of Peru, producing a total annual capacity of 4.9 million tons of cement. To support the large magnitude of the company’s operations, its legal team works to reinforce an ethical culture within the business and third parties, something which has risen to the top of its list of preoccupations in the last two years. In order to efficiently deal with these areas, the legal team is divided into four departments; legal and compliance, properties and regulatory, securities and quality and health and safety and environment. Comprised of nine lawyers, three legal trainees and four support staff, the legal team is led by general counsel, legal vice president and compliance officer Javier Durand, who reports to the CEO and board. At the end of 2018, the legal team was involved in the cash tender offer for up to US$150m of the 4.50% senior notes due in 2023, and currently is involved in the issuance of local bonds. The team has additionally been involved in successfully obtaining the ISO 37001, an anti-bribery management system certification for the company, with aims to combat corruption and successfully increasing good corporate governance practices throughout the company.
