In 2014, the Barrick Gold Corporation legal team facilitated a noteworthy mining contract between Barrick and local informal mining association AMACHIC. In 2016 AMACHIC was recognised as a legal association of coal miners in line with Peruvian law. This formalisation process benefitted approximately 500 families in communities in the neighbourhood of Lagunas Norte mine. The process enabled the miners to work in safety and health, according to the standards of Peruvian law, and conduct environmentally responsible operations.
