Legal Director for the Central and Andean South region | American Tower
Daniel Alvarez is Legal Director for the Central and Andean South (CAS) region at American Tower Corporation, where he leads complex, multi-jurisdictional legal operations across Central and South America. Based in Asunción, he plays a central role in supporting the company’s telecommunications infrastructure business in a demanding regulatory and operational environment, working closely with senior leadership, regional business teams and global stakeholders.
With extensive experience in cross-border transactions, regulatory compliance and dispute management, Daniel has developed a strong reputation as a strategic legal adviser capable of aligning legal risk management with commercial objectives. His practice spans corporate, commercial, regulatory and contentious matters, with a particular emphasis on telecommunications infrastructure and multi-market contractual frameworks supporting long-term investment.
In his current role, Daniel oversees legal support for day-to-day operations as well as transformative initiatives, including organisational restructuring, governance enhancements and the alignment of legal processes across jurisdictions. His work frequently involves coordinating local counsel, managing regional and international disputes, and navigating insolvency, arbitration and regulatory proceedings with significant financial and strategic implications.
A key aspect of Daniel’s leadership is his focus on building and developing high-performing legal teams. He manages and mentors a geographically dispersed group of lawyers, fostering collaboration, accountability and professional development. He is particularly focused on talent development, succession planning and creating opportunities for legal professionals to expand their regional and cross-functional expertise.
Prior to joining American Tower Corporation, Daniel gained substantial experience advising at the highest corporate and institutional levels in both the oil and gas and fast-moving consumer goods sectors. He served as Legal and International Adviser to the Presidency of Petróleos Paraguayos (Petropar), where he led international arbitration proceedings under ICC rules and participated in complex contractual negotiations and M&A initiatives within the energy sector. Earlier in his career, he held legal and corporate affairs roles at British American Tobacco across Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, advising on commercial, corporate, competition and regulatory matters within a highly regulated consumer products environment. This diverse industry background has shaped his pragmatic, commercially minded approach to legal risk and strategy.
Alongside his professional practice, Daniel maintains a strong connection to academia. He has been closely associated with the Catholic University of Asunción Law School, where he previously served as Professor of Political Economy and founded the Antitrust Law course. This academic experience reflects his long-standing interest in competition policy, regulation, and the intersection of law and economics.
Daniel holds an LL.M. in International Business and Economic Law from Georgetown University Law Center and an Executive MBA from IAE Business School, complementing his legal training with a strong foundation in strategic management and finance. He is recognised for his pragmatic judgement, clear communication style and ability to translate complex legal issues into actionable guidance for business leaders. His career reflects a consistent commitment to legal excellence, commercial partnership and leadership across some of the most dynamic and highly regulated industries in the region.
