In an increasingly complex global environment, how are you helping your organisation navigate risk while still supporting growth?

I strive to be involved from the very beginning in the process of defining complex business strategies, ensuring they are viable and actionable from a legal standpoint while taking into account the current global complexities. 

How has the role of General Counsel evolved in recent years, and where do you see GCs creating the most value today?

The role of the General Counsel has evolved to such an extent that today the General Counsel is not only consulted to validate strictly legal aspects of the company’s operations but has also taken on a significant strategic participation in the business definitions.

How has AI changed the legal function recently (including in the past year), and how are you approaching it within your team?

I believe that AI has had a profound impact on the legal profession recently, as it has improved the quality and turnaround time of work through several of the tools available; however, to some extent, I have recently noticed cases where there have been attempts to completely replace the lawyer’s insight and expertise in drafting legal documents with AI tools. This is risky because the documents do not always reflect the actual context, and at the same time, it is challenging due to the high level of accuracy they provide, making it difficult to discern when to consult the General Counsel and when not to. Regarding this last point, I make a point of constantly urging the team to use AI tools but to rely on legal input as the final step when dealing with complex legal documents.

What does effective leadership look like for a General Counsel today, and where do GCs have the most impact?

I view effective leadership as one in which the General Counsel is involved in assessing critical business decisions from the very beginning, when proposals and ideas are first being developed. Thanks to the holistic perspective that this role provides, the General Counsel has evolved from a secondary player to an active participant in the company’s business development, making the positive impact of being involved in business decisions clearly visible.
