Zee Entertainment’s international legal team was formed in Dubai in 2017 by highly-regarded general counsel Gordon Finlayson, who came from a role as European general counsel of HBO. Since joining Zee, Finlayson has succeeded in growing the team to six individuals based internationally in Dubai, Mumbai, Moscow, New York and Los Angeles. Recently the team undertook an international data protection review across the business to ensure compliance with international standards ahead of the May 2018 adoption of the GDPR in Europe. Finlayson also rolled out a new business compliance program in accordance with the FCPA and UKBA best practices, contributing to a rock-solid compliance culture across the international business. Rights protection is of course a major concern for a business located in the broadcasting sector, and the Zee Entertainment legal team has launched new and innovative processes for the protection and exploitation of television series format rights and has been instrumental in the development and exploitation of Zee IP rights in original programming in audiovisual series, online content and motion pictures in markets such as Africa, the US, Canada, Europe, MENA, Latin America and South East Asia. The successful establishment and expansion of the team has led to Finlayson being recognised by the industry press as being mentioned among the very best general counsel the region has to offer. In addition to Finlayson, the team has a number of other highly regarded lawyers within its ranks, with digital head of legal and business affairs Shuchi Jain being particularly lauded for her support of the company’s success in rolling out the new ZEE5 OTT Digital platform in India and around the world.
