With stakes in many of Abu Dhabi’s power generating facilities and oil and gas production facilities in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and North America, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, the government-controlled entity known as Taqa, has been one of the most important vehicles for delivering the Emirate’s economic strategy since it was founded in 2005. While Taqa’s many investments cover everything from energy generation to mining and water desalination it has, like most energy concerns, gone through a difficult period recently, with falling oil prices leading to first quarter losses in 2016. The legal team has, however, been a stabilising force, helping Taqa to deal with many of the challenges it has faced. According to one senior private practice lawyer, ‘Taqa has, like many companies in the region, faced difficult circumstances, but I credit their lawyers for making sure the situation was not a lot worse. They have been critical in helping the company see around corners and sense the dangers in the market.’ The legal team has itself been through a difficult period recently, with general counsel Michael McGuinty departing at the end of 2015. However, senior figures such as legal manager Jason Hussack have been able to offer strong guidance to the wider team and ensure that Taqa’s interests are protected.
