Samsung C&T, the construction and trading division of the wider Samsung Group, has been operating in the Middle East for nearly 20 years, dealing in building, civil infrastructure and power facilities. The company has had a hand in some of the region’s most impressive projects, and with developments like the Burj Khalifa tower and the Qurayyah power station it has helped to shape some of the largest-of-their-kind projects in the world. While this has given Samsung C&T a heightened visibility in the Middle East, it has also raised on-the-ground expectations for the predominantly South Korean company. Helping it meet these challenges is a small team of four lawyers based permanently in its UAE regional headquarters, supported by a wider team in Seoul. The team’s role in supporting tenders has been highlighted by nominators as one of its main strengths. Their strategic and legal assistance has helped Samsung C&T to land the contract for the Barakah nuclear power station, the first such facility in the UAE which is due to enter into operation next year.
