About

Andy Russell serves as the General counsel and compliance officer for the North Oil Company (NOC). In his role, he leads the Legal and Governance Division within NOC and is a core member of the organisation’s senior management team. With more than a decade of experience in the oil and gas industry, Andy brings a wealth of expertise to his position.

Andy joined NOC in 2017, shortly after the company assumed control of field operations from the previous operator. Before his current position, Andy was senior legal counsel at NOC, focused on overseeing key operational and project-related contractual matters. Andy also helped facilitating training and supporting the development of NOC’s contracting methods.

Prior to joining NOC, Andy worked for a number of years in private practice as an oil and gas solicitor. During this period, he carried out a wide range of upstream and service sector oil and gas legal matters, including multiple in-house secondments with operators in the UK and the Middle East, and with service companies. Furthermore, Andy is a practicing Scottish qualified solicitor, officially registered with the Law Society of Scotland, as well as a notary public with an official seal registered at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Andy is passionate about being “more than just a lawyer,” and actively encourages fellow legal counsel to dedicate time to self-improvement and deepening their understanding of their company’s operations. Andy encourages them to proactively engage in the organisation’s non-legal matters from time to time. Andy is motivated by supporting and developing the company, his colleagues, and his family and friends.

Key highlights that standout Andy’s career include his early client secondments, notably in Qatar in 2013, which accelerated his career through diverse experiences and networking. His first offshore trip, being offered the role of general counsel at NOC, with the opportunity to lead and develop the legal team members and division, and finally but undoubtedly the most important, becoming a father in May 2021.

Andy is looking forward to further developing NOC’s Legal and Governance Division in the coming years. His goal is to empower the team to make significant contributions to NOC’s business that extend beyond their traditional role as lawyers.
