Mohammed Al Noor serves as group chief general counsel and international advisor for one of the largest family-owned international investment companies in the region Action Group Holdings. He leads a team on the provision of the overall services of the group, combining his cross-border legal and business experience towards driving business growth with a focus on the GCC markets. ‘In my role of chief general counsel’, Al Noor says, ‘I wear many hats in the corporate organisation covering, business, legal, compliance, regulatory, risk assessment, and business development issues, particularly in GCC markets were demand is very high for senior bilingual experienced legal professionals’. He goes into further detail when discussing one of his more eye-catching recent deals: ‘In 2018 I was working on one of the largest oil and gas cross-border joint ventures with a British-European company, which was worth more than US$100m. It was an opportunity to work on balancing between corporate business objectives and managing mitigation of high global risks, as international regulations can be very daunting’. Al Noor is a forward-thinking general counsel and provides sage advice to his contemporaries: ‘The main goal of the chief general counsel is to minimize legal risks, adopt cost effective systems, reduce any litigation exposure, and ensure compliance. Thus, I have a message to general counsel: Believe in mentoring junior in-house lawyers and staff, as this is both rewarding and mentoring is key to the development and success of the general counsel’.
