‘In 2010, when I started my first in-house role at Gulf Aviation Academy in the aviation sector I established a legal department from scratch and negotiated large commercial contracts including a simulator purchase with Airbus’, Fadia Mubarak explains. ‘Then, in 2014 I joined a company ten times the size in the industrial field, GARMCO, which was around 30 years old. Again, I put a number of new initiatives into existence, including a [central] register for contracts and legal documents and new legal policies and procedures for the legal department in addition to assuring better corporate governance and compliance practices’. She continues to innovate to deal with the challenges facing GARMCO: ‘Today, I’m experiencing the step by step procedures of reorganisation (for the first time in Bahrain) under a new law of Bahrain: the Reorganisation and Bankruptcy law’. Mubarak has also helped GARMCO hugely through her support and execution of a number of negotiated settlements on behalf of the company, and is looking to expand the legal team in the future, currently working on adding to the team and training domestic Bahraini lawyers.
