Formerly a public sector lawyer in the Saudi Arabian foreign trade agency as a legal advisor to a deputy minister, Dr Abdullah M. Mattar joined Fawaz Alhokair Fashion Retail Group as the general counsel in May 2018. He takes on an international set of responsibilities as head of its law department, including ‘overseeing all legal issues related to corporate, business development, drafting and reviewing all kind of agreements in the company’. Dr Mattar regards the fact that he and his team have succeeded in ‘handling all litigations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia without any outsource support and following up litigations abroad’ as among his main career highlights, alongside his liaising with government on behalf of the company. As well as closing multi-billion SAR deals, Dr Mattar has also revolutionised the company’s legal department. ‘I’ve restructured the legal department locally and internationally which has strengthened our department and helped the company to save its cost on legal services’, he says.
