What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

I have been leading the international expansion of GlobeNet since 2010. The most significant accomplishments since 2021 have been the launching of the Malbec system, which connects Argentina, Brazil with the world, for which we have been working for about 5 years and continue working on all the agreements that govern the relationship with our partner. Also, I am currently working on the operations readiness of our newest affiliate, GlobeNet Chile, for which we have been negotiating and entering into complex commercial agreements with other big players located in the Americas.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most? Which have you found most useful in your legal team?

Connection, not only technologically speaking but as human need, has taken a different shape even before the pandemic. Any tool that allows the user to intuitively have a faster and better experience without additional costs will have a stronger influence in the role of an in-house team. WhatsApp has become the main way of communicating, brainstorming, and discussing in our cross-border team as it does have the benefit of being a low-cost accessible worldwide tool. Having said that, it also allows us to step aside from our role, becoming more than co-workers when sharing personal accomplishments, congratulating co-workers’ special life events and even joking occasionally.

Also, we have designed in-housel a legal review and approval tool using already acquired software from Salesforce and Conga. This tool has allowed our internal clients to make requests and track their progress as the tool has a horizontal, transparent, and efficient way to operate. It has also allowed us to provide confidence to the executives and signatories of the end product, as it comes with the internal approval of all the relevant stakeholders, generating collaboration in an integral way.

As a Florida-based in-house lawyer, how has the relationship between the state, Latin America, and the Caribbean influenced your company’s practises in recent years?

Having operations in both LATAM and the US has always been a challenging and interesting work for our team, and particularly for those of us in the US. The bulk of our operations and revenue is foreign but it is a must to comply with the local laws and regulations of Florida.
