Grupo Inversionistas En Autotransportes Mexicanos, S.A. (IAMSA) is one of Mexico’s main transport companies and is the largest bus operator in the country. It is also the only transport conglomerate in Mexico to operate via road, rail and air, and has expanded and diversified massively over the last decade, spurred by the entrepreneurial spirit of their president and prominent Mexican businessman Roberto Alcantar. The group completed one of the defining deals of the 2016 Mexican business calendar, when in December they finalised their purchase of budget airline VivaAerobus for an undisclosed amount. VivaAerobus was set up in 2006 as a joint investment by Grupo IAMSA and the Ryan family of Ryanair, with the 2016 purchase increasing IAMSA’s stake in the company to own it outright. While the monetary amount of this deal is undisclosed, the size of the companies involved means the transaction required a great deal of oversight by IAMSA’s legal function in order to complete effectively. Their marshalling of the successful transition of this complex arrangement, that has allowed Grupo IAMSA access to the lucrative budget airline market within Mexico, is an example of a legal team having a profound impact on the successful growth of their business.
