Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

I involved other teams such as the compliance team to work with internal business clients by developing action plans, clear SLAs, and defined rules of engagement to ensure business continuity in the face of potential legal challenges.

I also worked with a team to develop a regulatory compliance tracker for the business to easily identify any amendments to applicable laws that could impact the set-up of the platform, and promptly make configuration adjustments as necessary.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

Uber has a global commitment to sustainability. In Mexico, there have been multiple efforts, such as the revamp of products like Uber Planet and seeking new commercial alliances to promote the registration of electrical vehicles on the app, such as VEMO. We also have projects such as Grupo Apala and ilumexico to provide solar energy to families in rural areas where we have provided legal and regulatory advice.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

I was part of a pro bono project for refugees in collaboration with Von Wobeser y Sierra and the International Organisation for Refugees. I have enhanced women participation in the tech industry by speaking at forums and blogs and being a member of the Executive Council of Anahuac law school.

Additionally, I mentored and coached several colleagues, five of whom were promoted this year. I am committed to promoting internal talent and diversity within our team and company; for example, I hired a foreign lawyer to join my team and use equity criteria for new hires.

I constantly motivate my team’s participation in writing and speaking engagements and events to strengthen their personal brand. I actively encourage my team members to engage and lead in DEI initiatives.

What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, you are passionate about, and why?

I am passionate about justice. That is why I work on supporting minorities, raising awareness of equity and privilege, and especially, promoting women empowerment and the participation of women in the legal and tech fields.

I have a core belief that every individual deserves equal opportunities and access, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background and that we, as executives in senior positions, have the duty to work for a more inclusive and diverse communities and companies. Together we are stronger!
