Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

The challenge of leading a team in a hybrid environment makes it even more necessary to innovate in policies and procedures that are not costly for the organisation, but that allow for the best use of IT tools and enhance the efficient use of team members’ time, ultimately leading to improved services for both internal and external customers.

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

It is all about people, tools, and processes. Corporate lawyers must increasingly be more efficient in the service we provide to our clients. The efficiency in the processes, the flexibility of the collaborators and the use of technological tools allow us to update ourselves on legal and regulatory issues and, in this sense, provide the best and most innovative advice to the internal client to benefit the end client.

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Mexico?

The telecommunications industry has become compact with fewer players. That is why infrastructure providers must think about innovative solutions to provide their customers with a better experience in value-added services and technology. Notwithstanding the above, large operators are focusing on the core of their business and are letting companies that provide specialised infrastructure services take care of these matters so that they can focus on sales, leaving the operation to the experts.

How would you assess the impact of new technologies on the legal landscape in Mexico, and what measures would you propose to leverage these technologies while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations?

The good news is that stricter compliance measures are increasingly being implemented within companies in Mexico, making them more competitive. Companies with high standards in anti-corruption, anti-bribery and anti-money laundering compliance have relied on the implementation of policies known to our collaborators, suppliers, clients, and the public, which include reviewing compliance through technological tools of each of the collaborators and third parties with whom we maintain contractual relationships periodically. These tools are essential to provide certainty to shareholders, clients, and society that we have the highest standards and reaffirm our commitment to transparency and legality.

What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, you are passionate about, and why?

For years I have focused on the growth and development of women in legal work through active participation in company initiatives, forums, and mentoring. It seems hard to believe, but many young women lawyers still find few spaces to develop, having to choose between work and family and therefore unable to reconcile. So, although I am happy to say that the situation has changed in the 20 plus years that I have been in my professional career, thanks to the fact that there is a growing awareness of women’s contributions, there is still work to do. I am committed to fostering inclusivity, promoting flexibility, nurturing a culture of equality, offering mentorship, and collaborating with companies that embrace female leadership. I will persist in these efforts until we see a greater presence of women in leadership positions – such as managers, directors, vice presidents, CEOs, and board members.
