What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

We played an instrumental role in the groundbreaking joint venture partnership with the operators of the Perth Hotel, Johor. This resulted in the establishment of Southeast Asia’s first-ever esports-themed hotel, “SEM9 Senai”. We ensured adherence to complex regulations surrounding gaming licenses and Tourist Accommodation Premises guidelines, enabling the successful launch of SEAGM’s hospitality venture.

We also meticulously reviewed and negotiated key agreements, and provided recommendations to protect SEAGM’s interests while fostering a mutually beneficial relationship.

The successful launch of SEM9 Senai is a testament to the diligent efforts of the legal team in providing comprehensive legal support throughout the project. This esports-themed hotel offers a truly exceptional hospitality experience for both gamers and non-gamers alike. Moreover, the inclusion of on-site amenities such as a café, merchandise store, and other gaming-inspired facilities further elevates the overall experience, setting a new benchmark for hospitality in Southeast Asia.

Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

We led a ground-breaking initiative that revolutionised the treatment of esports players in Malaysia. Previously, all esports players were only signed as independent contractors. However, our team’s resourcefulness and legal acumen enabled us to develop innovative approaches that ensured compliance with existing laws, while championing the recognition of esports players as employees.

In addition to conducting thorough legal research and interpretation, our team engaged in meticulous drafting and negotiation of employment agreements tailored specifically to the unique requirements of esports players. We provided valuable advice on compliance matters and other legal issues, ensuring a seamless transition from independent contractor status to full-fledged employees. The remarkable aspect of our innovation lies in the fact that all these achievements were accomplished within the confines of our in-house capabilities, without the need for external assistance.

This achievement demonstrates our ongoing dedication to finding cost-effective and efficient solutions that enhance our legal team’s effectiveness and contribute to the overall success of the company.

How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?

By actively engaging in business discussions, in-house lawyers can gain a deep understanding of business goals and objectives, anticipate potential legal issues, and provide valuable insights and recommendations. By acting as trusted advisors, in-house lawyers demonstrate their commitment to supporting the success of the organisation and establish themselves as integral members of the business team.

Furthermore, being proactive in developing relationships with internal business units is equally important. In-house lawyers should take the initiative to reach out to key stakeholders within the company to understand their specific legal needs and challenges. By proactively offering legal guidance and support, in-house lawyers can foster strong partnerships built on trust and collaboration. This proactive approach allows them to gain insight into the business’s operations and objectives, enabling them to provide tailored legal advice that aligns with the strategic direction of the company.

Consistent communication and regular chat sessions with the CEO are essential for in-house lawyers to build strong relationships with business partners. By establishing an open line of communication with the CEO, in-house lawyers can stay informed about the organisation’s priorities, objectives, and potential legal challenges. This enables them to provide timely and strategic legal advice that aligns with the CEO’s vision.

In addition to internal communication, attending events where business partners may be present is a valuable opportunity to establish and strengthen relationships. These events provide a platform for in-house lawyers to showcase their expertise, stay informed about industry trends, and establish themselves as trusted advisors within the legal community, while demonstrating their commitment to building mutually beneficial partnerships beyond the confines of day-to-day operations.
