Arshad Karim is Director/Head of Legal, Japan at Abbott Japan LLC since June 2023. Prior to Abbott, he was Director & Associate General Counsel at Twitter for over four years, responsible for all legal matters in Japan and Korea, including but not limited to handling of regulatory matters, content regulation, drafting and negotiating various commercial agreements, managing multiple litigation in Japan, handling corporate governance issues, and addressing employment law issues. Before joining Twitter, he served as Senior Vice President & Legal Counsel for Nikko Asset Management Co., Ltd., one of the largest asset management companies in Japan. During his 12 years there, he was involved in multiple projects such as acquisitions of asset management companies in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia, establishment of joint ventures in China and India, and the listing process with the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Prior to that, he was Legal Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer for IMS Japan, an American pharmaceutical data firm where he established its Legal Department and led the Company’s efforts to comply with the newly established Personal Information Protection Law of Japan, among other responsibilities. His previous positions also include tenure at Hayabusa Kokusai Law Offices as a Foreign Associate and Deloitte & Touche in New York. He received a B.A. with Distinction in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and a J.D. from Loyola Law School.
