Three employees make up the Italian legal team for Nomura, one of Japan’s leading financial institutions. The head of the local legal and compliance department is Laura Del Favero who manages all legal and compliance activities for Nomura’s investment banking, research and global markets divisions. She is supported by head of legal and compliance, Roberta Fusetti who joined in 2008. Given the high volume and diverse nature of the work they handle as well as the ever-evolving regulatory environment in the financial sector, the members of the legal team expanded their coverage recently to focus on compliance matters. Being a proactive and hard-working group, Del Favero says ‘the legal team started to cover legal and compliance activities for other countries where the legal and compliance function is not established. This facilitated cost savings and better support to the business‘. One of the most important cases that the legal team has been involved in recently was a legal proceeding for corporate liability. Regarding these proceedings, Del Favero says ‘this was a chance to appreciate the massive work done by the local legal team on the project of complying with local corporate liability laws that also applies to foreign companies working in Italy’. The team was also recently lauded for developing informatics tools with colleagues located in other divisions for the purpose of managing information flows and monitoring compliance by employees with the company’s anti-bribery policy.
