About

Sebastien Bumbolo moved to liquid natural gas offshore terminal Adriatic LNG at the beginning of 2008 as general counsel, to oversee all legal matters regarding a great joint venture building and operating project in Italy which Bumbolo states was ‘one of the major energy infrastructures in Europe and unique in the gas sector’. In addition to this, he set up the legal department upon joining, creating a trusted support service for all the company functions within the board of directors and shareholders. Bumbolo started his in-house legal career after a few different experiences within law firms. His first in-house experience came in 1996 in the energy field, within the nuclear industry at COGEMA in La Hague (now Areva). He then moved to EDF in Paris to participate in one of the greatest challenges of the company, which involved the power market liberalisation with a special focus on antitrust, the set-up of the transmission system operator (TSO) and the development of trading activities. He then moved to Rome to join Italian multinational manufacturer and distributer of electricity and gas, Enel, at a point when Bumbolo says he ‘started thinking about internalisation, M&A and international commercial structure and work also on antitrust issues’. In Rome he joined Terna Group, focusing on international regulation and multiparty agreements with Europeans TSOs, which included more than 25 counterparties and their respective energy market regulators to manage cost sharing for the European system. Bumbolo considers himself a ‘multi-country/European in-house lawyer’ who has demonstrated his capability to operate from one country to another, with flexibility and resilience, while always creating value for his employer. Bumbolo is also a visiting lecturer in Luiss University and Università Statale di Milano, specialising in antitrust and energy market laws.
