Paola Nocerino has served as the general counsel for the Italian subsidiary of French multinational gas supplier Air Liquide for the last nine years, and has been at the forefront of a set of internal initiatives that have successfully obtained recognition of the legal function within the organisation. Nocerino has turned the function into a strategic partner of the business by encouraging it to have in depth knowledge of the business of the company, giving the department a huge competitive advantage on the ability to be effective when advising internal clients. Nocerino states she started her career in private practice dealing with corporate and commercial law ‘just as a legal professional’. She concludes that it was her in-house experience that turned her into the well-rounded and dynamic legal manager that she is today, able to deal with a lot of complexity ‘with little or no stress’ and equipping her to deal effectively with several branches of the law. Before joining Air Liquide, Nocerino served as the general counsel for Philips Italy from January 2006 to November 2009.
