About

Gianluca Liotta has served 3M for over 25 years having first joined the multinational conglomerate in 1991, and has been acting as general counsel and board member of the Italian subsidiary since 2003 before assuming his current role of general counsel for the West Europe region in 2017. During his career at 3M, he has provided counsel to various functions and businesses, either at local or European level. In this range of different assignments and roles performed at 3M, he has acquired extensive knowledge and experience on employment law, product responsibility, consumer law, environment, health and safety matters, competition law, M&A, corporate governance, commercial and contract law, data protection and criminal law. Over the years, Liotta has contributed as leading counsel to certain key projects in the area of business portfolio and M&A, new business models, knowledge management and collaboration, as well as legal education of clients. He has been a mentor and coach to several lawyers during their time at 3M, utilising his significant experience in the compliance field, and has contributed to a number of compliance efforts and achievements in Italy. Under his leadership, 3M Italy was granted the full three stars compliance rating by the relevant regulatory authority. He has chaired the watch committee in the Italian subsidiary for several years enabling the implementation of comprehensive organisational models. He has been always passionate about people and in 2010 became head of human resources for the Italian subsidiary as he kept the general counsel role. Under his HR assignment, 3M Italy was recognised as a “Great Place to Work” by an industry award, in 2015 and advanced programs on diversity and inclusion were launched. Amongst other priorities, the company’s pro-bono initiatives were boosted, further showing his dedication to ethical principles, as does Liotta’s position as a board member of the 3M Italy Foundation as well. Surrounding his approach and reasons for success Liotta identified that he has ‘increased the emphasis on leadership behaviours [within the company] and especially fostered collaboration and teamwork’, demonstrating his achievement and skilled management in the in-house legal field.
