Brian Mallon is the vice president of legal and procurement departments at ICON, the global healthcare company, and manages a department of 25 members. This team handles the management of supplier cost, risk and ordering certain equipment and services on a routine basis on behalf of operations, such as reagents used in central laboratory testing. He first joined the company in 2007 as a legal associate, and has worked his way through the ranks making a name for himself as a legal professional with exceptional management skills. Mallon highlights that, ‘put simply, the people I work with have an infectious “can, will do” attitude. There is a prevailing sense that what we do (whether you’re in the legal department, finance or clinical operations) impacts on patients’ lives. It’s easy to be motivated in this environment’. In 2014, Mallon developed, in conjunction with software development teams within ICON, a portal to generate legal terms and conditions to cover a specific service offering that is managed on a contract by contract basis. Specifically, it is handled by a local legal representative, or in-country sponsor as required by certain clinical trial regulations and accompanying training and standard operating procedures. Additionally, in 2018, Mallon was part of the implementation of a holistic system to screen third party vendors from a data privacy, IT security, legal compliance and ethics, quality assurance and procurement perspective, and risk rate ICON’s entire vendor population. He highlights that ‘this brought together multiple ICON departments and the project was visible (and rolled out) to all ICON employees. Since [the] go-live in July 2018 we have an extremely robust (if not industry leading) system and methodology to risk rate suppliers, and thus concentrate effort oversight on those material or “high risk” suppliers’.
