About

‘The India legal team was established in 2010 and in a mere seven year period it has grown to support the operations of the Jacobs business worldwide. This is a testament to the abilities of the team and the trust reposed in it – it is apt to mention that when members support regions outside India, they are frequently the lead negotiators’, says the distinguished Bharat Singh, associate general counsel of Jacobs Engineering Group, one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of technical, professional and construction services. A Fortune 500 listed company, the Jacobs business in India is serviced by a ‘group of young and enthusiastic lawyers who support the company’s business domestically’ and provides legal and risk management services to offices abroad – ‘particularly those located in the US, UK, Middle East and Asia Pacific regions’. The team also plays a pivotal role in streamlining and implementing compliance policies across the company. It is worthwhile to mention that the team endeavours to handle most legal issues in-house with limited reliance on outside counsel. Able to assist with the worldwide reorganisation of Jacobs in 2016, the company restructured its business along the lines of individual business units rather than on a geographical basis, which has had a ‘noticeable impact’ on the Indian legal team as well. Adapting to this new direction, Singh says ‘each lawyer now focusses on a particular line of business and provides it with end to end support’. Speaking to the success of this change, the team has ‘gained deeper insight into the business they support and the latter can more easily identify as the go to person for a legal issue they are grappling with’. In addition to this seamless assimilation into a new structure, the team provides support on various transactions in both acquisition and post-acquisition phases, ‘Jacobs recently announced the acquisition of a world-renowned design, engineering and program management firm – and the India team is lending support to complete this transaction. The legal team is well-equipped for this, for, as mentioned above, it handles legal issues and contract negotiations across geographies. Other significant transactions this year involved negotiations with public and private sector clients in the Petroleum and Chemical, FMCG, Pharma and Technology spaces’. In addition to Singh, who came to Jacobs with a litany of experience in premier law firms including top tier dispute resolution firm Karanjawala & Company in New Delhi, are other experts such as corporate counsel Megha Mittal and corporate counsel Swayam Arun.
