General counsel | WeWork India

Team size: Eight

Can you tell us a little about your significant accomplishments over the last few years, as a team or by yourself?

I joined WeWork India with over 20 years of prior experience at various law firms and companies, across corporate and estate, M&A, labour relations, litigations, policymaking and risk and compliance. I currently serve as general counsel, where I lead the legal and compliance functions and I am a part of the executive leadership team of the organisation.

At the company, I have led the way for the adoption of technologies within the legal framework for higher efficiency and reduced dependency on others, such as the centralised online legal repository, the implementation of virtual data rooms and central database, for each individual departments to have their own audits, and formulation of sales and lease playbooks, making tedious processes with multiple steps much easier to undertake. I was also responsible for the development of solid compliance practices, formation of risk and compliance policy and procedures, complex compliance investigations, as well as driving the insurance matters and requirements of the company. Additionally, we drove mergers and acquisitions of both teams and organisations and designed tax restructuring deals across the globe for the company. I am adept at handling complex, senior level investigations in compliance and ethics roles, and in the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, UK Bribery Act and Corruption Laws. Furthermore, I am also the executive sponsor of the mental wellbeing employee resource group at WeWork. Apart from being a legal contributor during the funding process and crafting the corporate and social responsibility (CSR) policy for WeWork India, there have been a lot of policies and procedures that I have implemented, such as taking on the role of a strategic partner and advising the company in its business and funding strategies and ensuring that the company is perceived as the safest and most compliant organisation.

How has the increasing consciousness of climate change and sustainability affected your company and the team’s priorities?

As an organisation, we have undertaken a lot of CSR initiatives to strive toward the betterment of society and I have contributed as much as possible as a member of the committee that decides which NGOs to partner with. For this, we have been associated with many NGOs, such as the Latika Roy Foundation where we have worked with differently abled children to help in their development. We have also been trying to accelerate the growth of women by helping them achieve financial independence. As women empowerment is such a significant cause and it is one in which I deeply believe in, we have collaborated with multiple NGOs to help women gain employment in different sectors. For instance, we worked with a few NGOs that help women earn a livelihood as taxi drivers and become independent.
